It’s no question that freestanding bathtubs are beautiful.
The question is how do you choose that perfect tub for your bathroom?
It can be extremely difficult to make a decision when it comes to freestanding tubs. If done right, this luxurious fixture can effortlessly transform your bathroom into the coziest space in your home.
Freestanding tubs add a significant, standout element to your bathroom – tying the entire room together.
The Perfect Tub
What are you really looking for with your freestanding tub:
Do you want this tub to be eye-catching?
Do you want this tub to be the comfiest, most relaxing thing you’ve ever been in?
Do you want this tub to be made out of the most durable material?
All the above?
Bathtubs are a personal preference.
What we can do is provide you with the knowledge so that you can choose the best tub for you.
Important note: Before you start, be aware of the size of your bathroom. You need to know measurements to determine what size of freestanding tub will work in your bathroom before you start shopping! Nothing is worse than finding the tub for your bathroom and realizing it won’t even fit.
PRO TIP: If you are considering a major size upgrade for your tub, be sure to check your hot water heater – you don’t want a 50-gallon tub and a 40-gallon hot water tank!
How Freestanding Tubs Look
A freestanding bath sets the mood for relaxation, especially in today’s hectic world.
When choosing a freestanding bath, consider how the design of the tub will affect the shape of your space. The curve of a tub can bring softness to an angular bathroom, or an angular bath can offset soft colours or add to a highly structured room.
Rectangular, box-like tubs will fit a modern or contemporary styled bathroom. On the other hand, a rounded, oval-shaped tub typically suits a traditional design; however, there are oval models that complement a modern design.
In terms of colour, almost all bathtubs are white or some shade of white. If you think a deeper colour will look better in your space, MAAX’s Ariosa tub in Thunder Grey is a dark grey colour that will fit your need.
How Freestanding Tubs Feel
If you have the space to play with, some bathtubs are large enough to comfortably fit two people inside at the same time. Tub size is entirely a personal preference – some people will enjoy a smaller tub, whereas some prefer spacious – reminiscent of a hot-tub.
The backrest angles also play a huge role in comfort. You will never know if you like it or not until you lie down in one.
If you know the exact dimensions of where you want to put your freestanding tub, you will typically find tubs in the following sizes:
60”, 66”, or 72” length
32”, 34”, 36”, or 42” width
Worried about installation problems? The F2 Drain from MAAX makes the installation easier than ever.
Faucet Type
To get water into your freestanding bathtub you need a tub filler, also called a tub faucet.
There are 3 options here:
1. Floor-mounted tub filler
This is a tub spout that stands freely on the ground beside your tub. This is typically the most expensive option, but has the most luxurious look. Floor-mounted will work best when you have a lot of space to work with. They tend to be quite bulky, but they look gorgeous.

2. Deck-mounted faucet
Depending on the tub model, some tubs have holes in the deck for faucets to be installed into. These faucets will sit directly in the deck of your tub. These have a similar look to floor-mounted; however, they are much smaller. This is a great option if you want a floor-mounted filler, but can’t fit it in next to your tub.

3. Wall-mounted faucet
If you want to purchase a wall-adjacent tub, you can install your faucet directly in the wall. This is easiest to install if there was already an old bathtub here that you are replacing.
