How To Renovate Your Small Bathroom To Make It Feel Larger

As we’re daydreaming about freestanding bathtubs and penthouse bathrooms, many of us are only working with a five-by-eight foot space for our relaxing oasis. Because of recent trends broadcasted across Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds, more and more people are now looking for tips on how to renovate a small bathroom to make it feel larger.

And this isn’t just because of our fantasizing. New bathrooms have nearly doubled in size over the past 30 years – older bathrooms are only 50 square feet or smaller.

A recent study by Houzz revealed the top trigger for a bathroom renovation is that 48% of homeowners are exasperated their dated, aging bathrooms. Meanwhile, nearly a third are dealing with a bathroom that is worn and falling apart.

And isn’t it time that we pay more attention to the bathroom? More than half of homeowners spend 30-60 minutes a day in their bathrooms, even using mobile devices in their bathrooms at least once a week checking email, texting, social media, listening to music and even reading.

This time to relax and unwind has resulted in bathroom home renovations focusing on increasing the shower size, plumbing fixtures, and wall finishes.

Whether you are embarking on a complete bathroom overhaul or hoping to do a bit of a touch-up, here are some of our top tips for transforming a small bathroom to give you more open space:

A pedestal sink is a strategic way to save both floor and counter space. The compact nature of these sinks offers an open, airy look compared to 30 inch bathroom vanities. The pedestal sink also allows your floor to be a central feature because of its delicate styling that doesn’t dominate the room.

A nice bonus about pedestal sinks is they are durable and easy to clean due to vitreous china; this is an enamel coating applied to ceramics, particularly porcelain, after they’ve been fired to make it tougher, denser, and shinier.

One of the best space-saving secrets is the wall hung toilet. A largely European trend, the wall hung toilet is starting to take off in both Canada and the United States.

These feature tanks that sit within a carrier support system inside the wall cavity. The bowl is fastened to the carrier system through the wall using bolts. This concealment makes wall hung toilets the easiest to clean since you can effortlessly reach the bathroom floor.

According to Reeves Journal, wall hung toilet units can save up to nine inches of space compared to more traditional floor models, while also allowing more height options.

Small rooms can feel confining and uncomfortable. While pedestal sinks and wall hung toilets are practical uses of space, a mirror adds a decorative touch that gives the illusion of a larger room.

If you are working with a small bathroom space, opt for a decorative, illuminating mirror. The benefit is it can reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter during the day and night. A backlit or illuminated mirror bounces light into the centre of the room, while the mirror adds depth.

When you are working with a small, confined shower space, it’s a good idea to use frameless glass sliding shower doors. Although this will save a bit of space, the main advantage is the stylish visual aesthetic. These doors create a more open, airy feeling giving the illusion of a more spacious bathroom since the shower is not impeding into the room.
